NFL head coaches have extremely little job security- If they don't succeed during their first few years, they usually get fired. And heading into the 2024 NFL season, there are 7 head coaches who are most likely to get fired this season. In other words, on the hot seat.
Dennis Allen:
Head coaching back-to-back playoff-less seasons with a star-studded roster in the NFL's worst division will put a coach on the hot seat, without question. And the Saints' head coach, Dennis Allen, is no different. The Saints have been mediocre during Allen's coaching tenure, and the team's aging roster only has a couple more years left of being a quarterback away from Super Bowl contention before they have to rebuild.
Now Allen obviously isn't entirely responsible for the Saints' lack of QB talent since Drew Brees retired. However, the Raiders made the playoffs with Derek Carr under center, without a 1,000+ yard receiver or an easy division, while the Saints had both of those in 2023, including Carr at quarterback and missed the postseason.
Sean McDermott:
Bills' head coach Sean McDermott is probably the most successful head coach on this list, with a formidable 73-41 career record and having helped turn a mediocre, directionless franchise into a Super Bowl contender. But that was all yesterday's news, as Sean McDermott is now on the hot seat for being unable to get one of the league's best rosters to the Super Bowl during their five years of contention. Just look at McDermott's 5-5 postseason record and 0-3 playoff record against the Chiefs.
McDermott narrowly hung on to his job last season after winning down the stretch to snag a playoff spot following a 5-5 start and OC John Dorsey getting fired. However, with the Bills having to let go of their top two receivers this offseason due to salary cap issues, their competitive window is closing, putting their head coach on the hot seat.
Kevin O'Connell:
After Kevin O'Connell spearheaded a rather disappointing 2023 Vikings season, Minnesota fans were quick to turn on him after O'Connell led the team to the playoffs in 2022. And while Vikings' fans were too hasty in wanting to fire their head coach last season, O'Connell will be on the hot seat in 2024. In the upcoming season, the Vikings will have difficulty vying for a playoff spot in a crowded NFC North, with the other three teams all being postseason contenders.
This means that even if the Vikings don't make the playoffs, Kevin O'Connell could still keep his job, especially since the organization waited too long to fire their previous head coach, Mike Zimmer. However, O'Connell was hired for his offensive prowess, and Minnesota's offense will need to succeed with rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy for O'Connell to stay with the Vikes.
Nick Sirianni:
The Jaguars weren't the only team to collapse down the stretch of the 2023 season, with Eagles' head coach Nick Sirianni taking a large amount of blame for the team going from 10-1 to 11-6 and having a horrendous showing in the playoffs. Eagles fans have high standards for their team's performance, thus if Philly struggles early in the season, there's no doubt Sirianni could be dishonorably discharged from the head coaching position, especially because of how much talent is on that roster. However, even if the Eagles make the playoffs, they can't get crushed by a 9-8 team in the first round again, or Sirianni could get booted out in that situation as well.
Matt Eberflus:
Matt Eberflus narrowly avoided losing his job last season, thanks to some wins down the stretch. But despite the Bears winning four of their final six games of 2023, their head coach still sits on a boiling-hot seat heading into 2024, as Eberflus's record in Chicago is 10-24 with no playoff berths. With Caleb Williams now at quarterback, D'andre Swift in the backfield, and Keenan Allen now part of the receiving corps, there is simply no excuse for the Bears to underperform again this year. If the team fails to meet expectations early in the season, the Bears' organization won't hesitate to give Eberflus the boot.
Brian Daboll:
Just one year after winning Coach of the Year honors, Brian Daboll now finds himself sitting on the hot seat. It just proves how little job security NFL coaches have. But Daboll's 2023 season was undoubtedly disastrous, with the Giants squeaking out just six wins after a playoff berth in the season prior. Not only did the team perform poorly overall, but quarterback Daniel Jones severely underperformed after signing a whopping 4-year, $160,000,000 million contract, making Daboll partly responsible. Now all that being said, Brian Daboll can't be blamed for the Giants' poor organizational decisions, so if he does get fired in 2024, it would be closer to the end of the season.
Doug Pederson:
The Jaguars don't receive much press attention, so casual NFL fans might not remember their devastating collapse down the stretch of 2023. But going from 7-2 to missing the playoffs at 8-9 is a rare occurrence and enough to put the team's head coach, Doug Pederson, on the hot seat. A collapse like that speaks for itself.
